Srinagar, May 14 (NationPress) Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GoC-in-C) of the Northern Command, had a significant meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday.
According to officials, Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, accompanied by Lt Gen Prashant Srivastava, GoC of the 15 Corps, briefed the LG on the latest updates and various aspects concerning the current security landscape.
This meeting marked the first interaction between the senior Army leader and the J&K LG following a de-escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan.
The Northern Command of the Indian Army is tasked with ensuring the security of the 740-km-long Line of Control (LoC) in J&K, in addition to combating terrorism in the region while collaborating with the Union Territory's police and security forces.
Following the Indian Air Force's precision strikes on terrorist camps and headquarters in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) and within Pakistan, the military response from Pakistan involved heavy mortar shelling on civilian areas along the LoC and the International Border in J&K.
The districts of Poonch, Rajouri, Baramulla, and Kupwara experienced the most severe devastation. The shelling resulted in the tragic loss of 18 civilian lives and the destruction of over 200 homes and shops due to Pakistani artillery fire.
In response, the administration evacuated hundreds of border residents to safer locations, forcing them to abandon their homes, livestock, pets, and fields as they fled for safety.
As tensions have eased, many border residents in J&K have begun returning home, although security forces have advised caution, urging people not to return until all unexploded shells in these areas are safely defused.
The J&K government has provided a cash ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the families of each victim of the Pakistani shelling.
In recent days, LG Sinha and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have been visiting the families most affected in the border areas.
