Eight people, including four women and four children, were killed on Sunday, 14 June after a pickup van plunged into a roadside well near Tandalwadi village on the Mhaswad-Pandharpur route in Solapur district, Maharashtra. The vehicle was carrying devotees returning from the Siddhanath Temple in Mhaswad when its brakes reportedly failed, causing it to overturn and fall into a well located on a private farm.

How the Accident Unfolded

According to preliminary reports, the group of devotees had visited the Siddhanath Temple in Mhaswad and were on their way back to their village when the van lost control on the Malshiras Taluka stretch of the route. The vehicle's brakes are said to have failed, sending it veering off the road and into the well. Seven survivors were pulled out and are currently undergoing treatment, according to officials.

Local residents and police rushed to the site immediately after the incident, launching a rescue and relief operation. The District Collector and Superintendent of Police reached the spot and coordinated the response.

CM Fadnavis Announces ₹5 Lakh Compensation

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took cognisance of the tragedy and expressed grief over the loss of lives. In a post on social media platform X, Fadnavis wrote: 'The incident at Tandulwadi in Malshiras Taluka, Solapur district — where devotees lost their lives after their vehicle fell into a well located in a private farm — is extremely tragic and heart-wrenching. I pay my heartfelt tributes to them. We share the grief of their families. It is a relief that seven people have been saved and are currently undergoing treatment. The District Collector and Superintendent of Police have immediately reached the site, and we are in constant touch with the local administration.'

Fadnavis further announced that the state government would provide financial assistance of ₹5 lakh to the families of each deceased victim.

Political Leaders Express Condolences

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Rohit Pawar also mourned the deaths, calling the accident 'deeply tragic, heart-wrenching, and shocking.' In a social media post, he extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

The incident has cast a pall of grief over Tandalwadi village and surrounding areas, with residents expressing shock at the scale of the tragedy.

Road Safety Context

This comes amid persistent concerns about road safety on rural Maharashtra highways, where overloaded vehicles and poorly maintained roads have been recurring factors in fatal accidents. The Mhaswad-Pandharpur route, frequented by pilgrims especially during religious seasons, has seen multiple incidents in recent years. Authorities have yet to confirm whether the van was operating with a valid permit or was overcrowded at the time of the accident.
