Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 14 June expressed grief over the deaths of eight people — including four women and four children — in a road accident in Solapur district, Maharashtra, after a pickup van plunged into a well near Tandalwadi village. What Happened

The tragedy unfolded on the Mhaswad–Pandharpur route in Malshiras Taluka, Solapur district, when a pickup van carrying devotees returning from the Siddhanath Temple in Mhaswad overturned and veered into a well on a private farm. According to preliminary reports, the vehicle's brakes failed, causing it to lose balance and plunge into the roadside well. The incident triggered panic across the village and cast a pall of grief over the area.

Rescue and Relief Operations

Local residents and police rushed to the site immediately after the accident and launched rescue operations. Seven people were reportedly saved and are currently undergoing treatment. The District Collector and Superintendent of Police reached the spot promptly, according to official statements.

The Prime Minister's Office, in a post on X, stated: 'Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in Solapur Rural, Maharashtra, due to a tragic mishap. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.' Modi added that the PMNRF ex gratia of ₹2 lakh would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 to the injured.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also acknowledged the tragedy and announced that the state government would provide ₹5 lakh in financial assistance to the families of each deceased. In a post on X, Fadnavis described the incident as 'extremely tragic and heart-wrenching' and confirmed that senior district officials had reached the site.

Political Response

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Rohit Pawar also mourned the deaths, calling the news 'deeply tragic, heart-wrenching, and shocking.' He extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

What Happens Next

Authorities are expected to conduct an inquiry into the cause of the brake failure and the condition of the vehicle. The combined compensation from the Centre and the Maharashtra state government amounts to ₹7 lakh per deceased family.
