How Are 800 Students from Northeast Enhancing Their Space Science Knowledge at ISRO?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shillong, Jan 10 (NationPress) In a significant effort to elevate awareness of space science and technology among the youth of India's Northeastern region, approximately 800 outstanding science students from all eight states visited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), with 100 students from each state participating, as announced by officials on Friday.
An official from the North Eastern Council (NEC) stated that this initiative, led by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), is part of the North East Students Programme for Awareness, Reach, and Knowledge on Space (NE-SPARKS), a key project aimed at fostering understanding of space science and technology in the Northeast.
This transformative initiative allows selected students to gain direct exposure to India's remarkable space research accomplishments through guided tours of ISRO centers in Bengaluru, effectively addressing geographical and informational barriers that have previously hindered access to such opportunities.
During the 12th meeting of the NESAC Society on December 21, 2024, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who also leads the Shillong-based North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) Society, emphasized organizing a visit for 800 gifted science students from all eight Northeastern states, each comprising 100 students.
This instruction highlights the Union government's dedication to fostering inclusive development and enhancing educational opportunities in the region.
The initiative is a collaborative endeavor involving the Ministry of DoNER, NEC, ISRO, NESAC, and the respective state governments of the Northeastern states.
Coordinated by NESAC and ISRO's Capacity Building Programme Office (CBPO), the initiative receives strong support from the state governments, ensuring effective implementation at the grassroots level.
The official noted that the overall sanctioned budget for the initiative is Rs 3.83 crore, following a funding ratio of 60:40, wherein the NEC contributes Rs 2.3 crore and the state governments collectively provide Rs 1.53 crore.
This financial model reflects a shared commitment by both Central and state authorities to nurture scientific talent in the region.
NE-SPARKS will be executed in eight batches between April 2025 and December 2025, with each batch consisting of 90-100 students from the eight NER states, accompanied by 10 coordinators who will facilitate and guide their educational journey.
Through meaningful interactions with ISRO scientists and engineers, along with direct exposure to advanced space technologies, NE-SPARKS aims to inspire young minds and promote STEM education among Northeastern students.
The programme empowers participants to envision and pursue careers in space science and technology, thereby contributing to India's broader objective of achieving global leadership in the space sector.
By investing in the region's youth and providing them with world-class exposure to pioneering space research, NE-SPARKS acts as a catalyst for scientific ambition and technological progress in India's Northeastern region, as per the official.
