Political Tensions Rise as AAP Replaces Raghav Chadha
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) A political turmoil surfaced on Thursday following the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) decision to replace MP Raghav Chadha as the Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress criticized AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, urging him to reconsider this decision, indicating that "all is not well" between the party and the MP from the Upper House.
BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri expressed his disapproval to IANS, stating, "I strongly condemn the AAP leadership's decision. Arvind Kejriwal ought to reconsider replacing Raghav Chadha as the Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha."
Reports suggest that AAP has also requested the Rajya Sabha Secretariat not to allocate time for Chadha, the current Deputy Leader in the Upper House.
In recent months, Raghav Chadha has been vocal about public issues and has highlighted the struggles faced by citizens.
In response to Chadha's replacement, Bidhuri remarked, "If the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal's party has silenced a senior leader like Raghav Chadha, it shows complete disregard for the law and Constitution. How can anyone be prevented from speaking? Whether AAP chooses to retain him as Deputy Leader is their prerogative."
He further added, "However, if a Member of Parliament wishes to address the House, engage with the media, or speak on national interests, how can he be silenced?"
Moreover, Bidhuri commended Chadha for his past speeches in both the Rajya Sabha and the Delhi Assembly.
"Raghav Chadha was an effective speaker in both the (Delhi) Vidhan Sabha and Rajya Sabha. His speeches were well-received," said the BJP MP.
Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring commented to IANS, "The decision made by the Aam Aadmi Party is their internal affair. However, it is evident that there are issues within the party."
"Particularly, the relationship between Raghav Chadha and AAP appears to be strained. This might just be the beginning; we could see them diverging entirely in the near future," he added.
Warring predicted that AAP and MP Raghav Chadha might find themselves at odds going forward.
Meanwhile, AAP MP Ashok Mittal, who will take over as the new Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha, expressed his gratitude towards party chief Kejriwal.
He stated to IANS, "I would like to thank AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal for this new responsibility. I intend to carry out this role with integrity and commitment, representing the party, Punjab, and the nation in the House (Rajya Sabha) and beyond."
Mittal dismissed claims of Raghav Chadha's dissatisfaction with AAP.
"I haven't encountered such reports," Mittal remarked.
Moreover, he emphasized, "We (AAP) are a democratic organization and uphold democratic traditions. We believe in assigning various responsibilities to each leader and MP at different times. This aligns with our democratic principles."
"Prior to Raghav Chadha, N.D. Gupta held this position, and someone else will step in after me. Such a rotation should be standard in every democratic party," he explained.
Ashok Mittal also denied rumors regarding Chadha's potential switch to the BJP.
