New Delhi, July 3 (NationPress) Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal has declared that the party will independently contest the forthcoming Bihar Assembly elections, sparking a variety of responses from political entities. While reactions from both allies and opponents were anticipated, the most critical came from the Congress party, AAP's former partner in the INDIA bloc.
From JD(U) to Congress and beyond, there is a consensus that AAP is not a significant player in Bihar's electoral scene and its entry will not influence the state's power dynamics.
JD(U) representative Rajiv Ranjan remarked that AAP's intention to compete for all 243 Bihar seats indicates serious rifts within the INDIA bloc.
“This alliance is crumbling and heading for more deterioration, especially since Kejriwal himself acknowledged that the INDIA bloc was created for the 2024 elections,” he stated.
He further noted that AAP's involvement in Bihar will affect its partners in the INDIA bloc, including RJD, as Tejashwi Yadav and his party may struggle to gain support.
Congress leader Akhilesh Prasad Singh dismissed the move as merely a ‘publicity stunt’.
"AAP has no visibility in Bihar; people aren’t even familiar with Kejriwal’s party name. Such declarations are just attempts to stay relevant. While Kejriwal might be recognized here, his party has no standing in Bihar,” he remarked.
Another Congress member, Tariq Anwar, expressed that while AAP is welcome to run in Bihar, it might face more backlash than support.
“Every party has the autonomy to contest elections based on its discretion. AAP can choose its path in the upcoming elections, but the reality is that AAP lacks a solid foundation in Bihar, with no elected representatives even at the panchayat level,” he stated.
“Opting for a political venture under such circumstances could lead to greater losses than gains,” he added.
Notably, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, during a press briefing in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar on Thursday, proclaimed, “AAP will contest the Bihar elections independently. The INDIA bloc was only meant for the Lok Sabha elections; there is no ongoing alliance with Congress.”
When asked further, he said, “If there was any alliance, why did Congress participate in the Visavadar bypolls? They aimed to defeat us. The BJP sent Congress to undermine us and divide the votes."
