West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dilip Ghosh on Tuesday, 28 July declared that the truth in the alleged signature forgery case involving All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee will surface only after a thorough investigation. Ghosh's remarks came as the controversy over fabricated MLA signatures in New Town, West Bengal continued to deepen.

Background: What the Signature Case Is About

The controversy centres on allegations that 14 out of approximately 70 MLA signatures supporting the nomination of the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal State Assembly — Sovandeb Chattopadhyay — were fabricated. Expelled TMC MLAs Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha filed a complaint with Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose, alleging that no such resolution was passed at the 6 May meeting and that they signed the resolution register only on 19 May. They further alleged that party leaders subsequently manipulated records and that several signatures appeared in suspicious block letters.

CID Questioning and Court Protection

The West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) questioned Abhishek Banerjee at Bhabani Bhaban, the CID headquarters, for over five hours on 11 June 2026, followed by a second round of questioning on 14 June 2026. The Calcutta High Court granted Banerjee interim protection from coercive action while directing him to cooperate with the ongoing state investigation.

What Dilip Ghosh Said

Speaking to reporters, Ghosh alleged that politics in the Diamond Harbour constituency had long been driven by what he described as irregularities. 'Everything is completely fake. The kind of politics that used to take place in Diamond Harbour was based on fake voters. Even the voting process was manipulated. Trinamool Congress, which had once secured nearly eight lakh votes there, has now slipped to the fourth position. Now, gradually, the truth is coming to light,' he said.

Ghosh also raised questions about the alleged involvement of medical professionals in the case, seeking a probe into reports of fake certificates purportedly arranged for individuals planning to travel abroad. 'However, the question remains as to how doctors became involved and how fake certificates were arranged for people planning to go abroad. There should be a proper inquiry, and the truth will eventually come out,' he added.

Other Remarks by Ghosh

Separately, Ghosh commented on reports of a possible NCP entry into the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), saying the coalition already comprises 24 constituent parties and that any expansion in support for development was welcome. On an AK-47 firing incident in Bihar, he said no one has the right to take the law into their own hands and that authorities would take appropriate action. He also praised India's sporting progress, crediting the government's Khelo India programme and overseas training initiatives for improved performances at the Commonwealth Games, Olympics, and Asian Games, citing Neeraj Chopra as a prominent beneficiary.

With the CID investigation still ongoing and the Calcutta High Court monitoring proceedings, the signature forgery case is expected to remain a flashpoint in West Bengal politics in the weeks ahead.
