Ahmedabad is undergoing a sweeping hospitality and infrastructure transformation as it gears up to host the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2030 — the centenary edition of the Games — with the city also positioning itself as India's frontrunner for the Olympic Games 2036. A string of five-star hotel projects, convention facilities, and civic upgrades are reshaping the city's skyline ahead of what is expected to be an unprecedented influx of athletes and visitors from across the globe.

Hotels Pipeline: By the Numbers

According to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), approvals were granted for around nine hotels within the AMC area in 2025 alone, all of which are currently under construction. A further four hotels received approvals in 2026, with work already underway on those projects as well.

Five new five-star hotel projects are coming up along Sindhu Bhavan Road, with three already under construction. Plans for the remaining two or three have been submitted to the municipal corporation for approval, with construction set to begin shortly, according to industry representatives.

In one of the most prominent projects, a 16-storey, five-star hotel with 200 to 300 rooms, paired with a convention and exhibition centre, is planned on the western bank of the Sabarmati river. One or two additional hotels are also planned near the airport.

What City Officials Said

Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani confirmed the pace of development. 'We approved around nine hotels within the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation area in 2025, and their construction is currently in progress. Approvals for four more hotels were granted in 2026, and construction work on these is also underway. A large number of hotels are being built at various locations across Ahmedabad city,' he said.

Narendra Somani, Ahmedabad President of the Hotel Association, added: 'Preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games are underway. We are witnessing the development of infrastructure and hospitality projects across the city. A large convention centre and a major five-star hotel are being built on the riverfront, alongside one or two new hotels near the airport.'

Infrastructure Beyond Hotels

The hospitality push is accompanied by a broader civic overhaul. Work is reportedly progressing on multiple projects covering roads, bridges, water supply, drainage, railways, and public transport — all critical to managing the logistical demands of a global multi-sport event.

Notably, homestays are also being developed alongside formal hotel capacity, suggesting authorities are anticipating demand that will exceed even the expanded five-star inventory.

The Olympics 2036 Angle

The CWG 2030 preparations carry a secondary strategic dimension: as the Union government plans to formally bid for the Olympics 2036, the infrastructure momentum in Ahmedabad could position it as the de-facto host city for that bid. This comes amid India's broader push to raise its global sporting profile, with the country having already invested heavily in stadiums and athlete development over the past decade. The convergence of CWG readiness and Olympic ambition makes Ahmedabad's current development cycle arguably the most consequential urban sporting build-up in Indian history.
