149th Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025: Ahmedabad gears up for July 16 procession
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad is in the final stages of multi-agency preparations for the 149th Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra, scheduled for 16 July, with civic officials, police, temple representatives, and community leaders coordinating to ensure the annual procession proceeds peacefully and without disruption.
Key Developments
A high-level meeting of the City Unity Committee, chaired by Mayor Hitesh Barot at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) headquarters in the Danapith area on Tuesday, reviewed all arrangements for the procession. The meeting assessed lessons from previous years and incorporated recommendations from the Jagannath Temple Trust to sharpen this year's organisation.
Mayor Barot described the Rath Yatra as 'a symbol of the city's faith and unity,' adding that the AMC would absorb committee suggestions as it completes remaining preparations. 'The AMC, in coordination with the police and other agencies, would ensure all necessary arrangements were in place so that the procession could proceed peacefully and Lord Jagannath's chariot reached the temple without obstruction. On-site inspections of various arrangements would be carried out before the procession,' he said.
Infrastructure and Logistics
Power infrastructure along the procession route has been significantly reinforced, with 730 electricity poles, 560 floodlights, 11 uninterrupted power supply (UPS) units, and 33 Torrent Power personnel deployed to ensure uninterrupted lighting. Catchpits and drainage lines are to be cleaned before the event, and green coverings on balconies have been proposed to discourage overcrowding at vantage points.
Arrangements include timely water supply for more than 101 trucks accompanying the procession, continuous sanitation work, deployment of fire services, removal of dilapidated structures along the route, tree trimming, issuance of identity cards to khalasis (chariot attendants), and ensuring CCTV cameras remain operational throughout the route.
Special Measures for Elephants
Authorities have outlined dedicated protocols for the elephants participating in the procession. DJs and high-volume sound systems will not be permitted while the elephants are passing, to prevent noise stress and inconvenience to the animals — a measure introduced following feedback from previous editions.
Traffic and Law-and-Order Plan
Traffic management, particularly in the Jamalpur area during the return leg of the procession, received focused attention. Revised traffic arrangements, improved lighting, and upgraded civic infrastructure have been planned based on prior experience. Officials also discussed measures to maintain law and order and communal harmony throughout the procession's route.
With preparations advancing through coordinated efforts among the AMC, Ahmedabad Police, and allied agencies, authorities say all remaining works are on track to be completed well ahead of the 16 July Rath Yatra.
