AIMJ President's Fatwa on New Year Celebrations Faces Backlash

New Delhi, Dec 30 (NationPress) A fatwa issued by the national president of the All India Muslim Jamaat (AIMJ), Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, has encountered significant criticism from numerous leaders within the Muslim community. Several Muslim leaders have condemned the cleric for his directive urging Muslims to refrain from celebrating the New Year.

In a statement made in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, he contended that New Year celebrations are inconsistent with Islamic traditions, as they signify the commencement of the Christian calendar year.

Maulana Shahabuddin articulated, “It is not a point of pride for young men and women to observe the New Year or exchange greetings on this occasion, as it marks the beginning of the English year. Engaging in any non-religious or un-Islamic activities is categorically forbidden for Muslims. Young Muslims should steer clear of such celebrations.”

This statement ignited reactions from political figures across various parties, resulting in pointed criticism and diverse viewpoints.

Senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi dismissed the fatwa, stating, “A fraudulent fatwa factory is operating without restraint. These fatwas are issued as casually as vegetables are sold on carts. Such declarations merely seek to incite discord. Nevertheless, society remains vigilant and aware of these divisive tactics.”

Another BJP leader, Danish Azad Ansari, highlighted the need for progress over controversies, asserting, “Our focus should be on progress and development as a community. This should be our main priority and mindset.”

Shiv Sena UBT leader Anand Dubey took a firm position against the cleric’s directive, questioning, “Do these Maulanas even engage in study or merely claim to possess knowledge? The entire world embraces the New Year, yet they criticize it. Preventing any particular religion from celebrating is shortsighted. These Maulanas lack comprehension and should be sent back to madrasas to enhance their knowledge. Leaders like Giriraj Singh and certain BJP members echo the same divisive rhetoric as these Maulanas, which is detrimental.”

Conversely, SP leader Abu Azmi expressed a differing perspective, stating, “I do not partake in New Year celebrations. I solely pray for the well-being of India, for everyone to find happiness, and for our economy to thrive to a trillion dollars. Engaging in drinking, partying, and other un-Islamic activities is not something we endorse. This fatwa targets a specific committee, not the entire nation, and aligns with Islamic principles.”
