In a landmark announcement from New Delhi on March 25, Akashvani is set to commence the broadcast of a complete six-stanza version of the national anthem Vande Mataram starting Thursday. This decision represents a notable departure from the traditionally aired two-stanza version, as revealed by government officials.

In addition to the primary rendition, the complete six-stanza composition will be recorded in various regional formats, showcasing India's rich musical diversity.

Since the time of Independence, it has been a customary practice for Akashvani stations to initiate their morning broadcasts with the iconic signature tune, followed by a two-stanza version of Vande Mataram, which typically lasts around 65 seconds.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting stated that, in accordance with the Ministry of Home Affairs' directive dated January 28, 2026, regarding the national song's six stanzas, all Akashvani stations will begin airing this new rendition starting March 26, 2026. This updated version runs for 3 minutes and 10 seconds.

The first version to be played features the renowned Hindustani classical singer Pt. Chandrashekhar Vaze performing in Raag Des, as per official sources.

Moreover, authorities have indicated that additional interpretations of the national song are in production, utilizing regional instruments and musical styles. These versions will be broadcasted by Akashvani stations across various states to ensure a broader cultural representation.

Earlier, on February 11, the Centre released comprehensive guidelines outlining the official protocol for the performance of Vande Mataram, detailing how and when it should be rendered at government functions, as well as the expected behavior of attendees, particularly concerning the national anthem.

The new guidelines, issued by the Union Home Ministry, aim to formalize the status and ceremonial significance of the national song during public and official events nationwide, emphasizing its observance at state functions and institutional gatherings.

According to these guidelines, the complete official version of Vande Mataram, featuring six stanzas and lasting approximately 3 minutes and 10 seconds, is to be performed or played during significant state occasions.

These occasions include events such as the hoisting of the Tricolour, the formal arrival and departure of the President and Governors at official ceremonies, and before and after their scheduled addresses at such events.

A crucial aspect of the directive specifies that when both Vande Mataram and the national anthem are part of a program, the national song must be performed before the national anthem.
