A lighthouse has gone dark. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav paid an emotional tribute on Saturday, 26 September 2026 to veteran socialist leader Ram Govind Chaudhary, mourning the passing of a figure he described as an irreplaceable beacon of socialist values who held the flame lit by Jayaprakash Narayan and former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar. Writing to 'priya samajwadiyon' — 'dear socialists' — Akhilesh called Chaudhary a 'mahan samajwadi prakash-stambh', a great socialist lighthouse, whose voice had always commanded respect in the assembly, even when the Samajwadi Party held fewer than 50 seats in the house.

From Ballia's revolutionary soil to the assembly floor

Ram Govind Chaudhary was rooted in Ballia, the eastern Uttar Pradesh district long celebrated as a cradle of revolutionary politics and freedom struggle activity. He climbed through the gruelling terrain of student politics before reaching the state assembly, where he served as Leader of the Opposition under the Samajwadi Party banner. Akhilesh recalled that when Chaudhary rose to speak, the house listened with rare stillness and sincerity — his sharp arguments and commitment to truth leaving an impression that crossed party lines.

The JP–Chandra Shekhar lineage he carried forward

Chaudhary belonged to a generation shaped directly by two towering socialist mentors. Jayaprakash Narayan — the freedom fighter who galvanised India's most powerful post-Independence democratic uprising in 1974–77, challenging the Emergency and demanding the restoration of constitutional rights — was one guiding star. The other was Chandra Shekhar, who led a short-lived minority government in 1990–91 and represented the socialist tradition's attempt to hold its own at the apex of Indian power. Chaudhary, Akhilesh wrote, kept the torch of their values — constitutional, democratic, socialist, secular — burning without pause throughout his political life.

A living classroom of grassroots politics

Akhilesh's tribute went beyond the procedural. He described Chaudhary as a man whose deep connect with ordinary people and grassroots reach made him, in his own person, 'ek sakriya pathshala' — an active school of harmonious, positive social politics. He stood unflinchingly for freedom, equality, and the dignity of the individual, the post said, even when institutional winds blew the other way. His alignment with SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav ('Netaji'), Akhilesh noted, remained steady through every ideological battle the party fought. In closing, Akhilesh turned the moment into a call to action: it is now the collective responsibility of every socialist, he wrote, to move forward with complete dedication toward the goals of those elders who remain among them only as ideological inspiration. The tribute ends with a handwritten sign-off — 'Aapka Akhilesh', 'Your Akhilesh' — a personal flourish rare in formal political posts. Socialism's second-generation bridge has fallen.
