Aryabhatta Knowledge University Patna expands employment-focused education under VC Sharad Yadav
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU) in Patna has significantly broadened its academic and research footprint under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Sharad Kumar Yadav, with new schools, postgraduate courses, research centres, and industry partnerships introduced during his tenure. According to an official university statement, the initiatives collectively aim to transform AKU from a conventional affiliating university into an employment-oriented research and innovation hub.
Academic Expansion and New Schools
Under Prof. Yadav's stewardship, an Academic Advisory Committee was constituted to provide structured guidance across all university schools. Several existing centres — including those in Journalism and Mass Communication, Geography, River Studies, Stem Cell Technology, Astronomy, and Philosophy — were upgraded to full schools, enabling dedicated teaching and research activities.
New centres were also established for Law and Legal Sciences, Management Studies, and Urban Policy and Good Governance. The statement described the Centre for Urban Policy and Good Governance as a 'significant academic initiative of its kind' in Bihar.
New Courses and Research Programmes
Postgraduate programmes were launched in disciplines including Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, River Science, Water Resources Engineering, GIS and Remote Sensing, Space Science and Astronomy, Management, Economics, Philosophy, Journalism and Communication, and Geography.
Employment- and research-oriented courses such as Film Production, Photography, Digital and Online Journalism, Media Writing, and Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine were also introduced. The university has recorded two patent publications in the field of Nanoscience, according to the statement.
NEP Alignment, Digital Governance, and Infrastructure
The university updated its curricula in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. To strengthen the research ecosystem, a Research Consortium was formed, alongside the establishment of an incubation centre, a placement cell, a modern central library, and an IT cell. E-governance has been promoted through the 'Samarth' eGov Suite — an open-standard enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform developed for higher education institutions across India.
Industry and Institutional Collaborations
AKU has signed agreements with a range of national institutions and industries, including IIT Patna, IGIMS, the National Institute of Hydrology, NIELIT, the National Institute of Ayurveda, Chandragupt Institute of Management, Amity University, DY Patil International University, Bihar Animal Sciences University, and JP University.
Collaborations have also been extended to emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Machine Learning, drone technology, robotics, nanotechnology, stem cell science, and space education. Agreements covering Python programming and the use of Generative AI in business applications have been reached as well.
Global Outreach and Skill Development
The university was represented in a delegation of Indian Vice-Chancellors visiting Japan and participated in an inter-university collaboration visit to the UK. AKU also hosted the East Zone Vice-Chancellors' Meet of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), attended by Vice-Chancellors from nearly 100 universities. The establishment of an Academic and Administrative Development Centre by the AIU at AKU was cited as a notable achievement.
On the skill development front, approximately 900 students reportedly received advanced training in land surveying through a collaboration between the Department of Geography and the Bihar Board of Open Schooling and Examination. Steps have also been taken to establish the 'Aryabhata Space Club' in Bihar, with workshops organised to support the School of Astronomy and collaborations forged with the Survey of India and the Satcom Industry Association.
With initiatives spanning cybersecurity, social behaviour change, urban policy, space science, and digital media, AKU is positioning itself as an emerging research and innovation centre in eastern India.
