Amarnath Yatra 2026: Security review held in Anantnag ahead of July 3 start
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Senior Superintendent of Police Amod Ashok Nagpure (IPS), SSP Anantnag, on Wednesday chaired a joint coordination meeting with Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) officers in Anantnag district, Jammu & Kashmir, to review security preparedness ahead of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026 (SANJY-2026). The yatra is scheduled to begin on 3 July 2026 and run for 57 days, concluding on 28 August 2026 — coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.
What the Security Review Covered
According to a police statement, the meeting examined the comprehensive security plan for SANJY-2026, with emphasis on seamless inter-agency coordination, effective communication, and strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). SSP Nagpure directed all officers to maintain a high level of alertness and remain professionally vigilant to respond promptly to any emerging situation.
The review also covered deployment strategies, area domination measures, convoy security, access control, and other operational arrangements. Officers were instructed to conduct regular inspections and maintain continuous monitoring of their respective areas of responsibility.
Two Routes to the Cave Shrine
Pilgrims heading to the cave shrine — located in the Kashmir Himalayas at an altitude of 3,880 metres — can choose between two routes. The traditional Pahalgam base camp route in Anantnag district is longer and takes approximately four days to reach the shrine. The shorter Baltal base camp route in Ganderbal district allows pilgrims to complete their visit and return to base on the same day.
The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe the formation symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.
The Chhari Mubarak Tradition
The sacred Chhari Mubarak (Holy Mace of Lord Shiva) is carried in a procession of Sadhus from the Dashnami Akhara Building temple in Budshah Chowk, Srinagar, under the custodianship of Mahant Deependra Giri. The procession follows the Pahalgam route to the cave shrine, and the Chhari Mubarak's arrival is followed by a traditional puja marking the formal commencement of the yatra.
Security Commitment for Pilgrims
Reiterating the police's commitment to pilgrim safety, SSP Nagpure stressed that all necessary measures are being put in place to ensure a peaceful, orderly, and incident-free yatra through close coordination between Police and CAPF personnel. This comes amid heightened security consciousness in the region, with authorities leaving no operational detail unaddressed in the run-up to one of India's largest annual pilgrimages.
