Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Establishes 126 Animal Feeding Stations and Implements AI for Stray Management
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Feb 27 (NationPress) The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated a comprehensive program aimed at managing stray animals and enhancing the coexistence between humans and animals, as announced by officials on Friday.
The new policy designates specific locations for feeding stray dogs and other animals, imposing fines for feeding in unauthorized areas.
According to the AMC’s Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD), the initiative seeks to establish organized feeding practices while maintaining the city’s cleanliness.
Naresh Rajput, CNCD Head, stated, “In accordance with the Central government’s Animals Birth Rules 2023 and Supreme Court directives, each urban local body is required to set up feeding zones for street dogs. This effort aims to curb littering and public disturbances caused by feeding animals in random places.”
The corporation is also leveraging artificial intelligence to tackle the challenges posed by stray cows.
To date, over 110,000 cows in the city have been equipped with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags and microchips.
Additionally, cameras installed at 130 junctions capture images of these animals, which assists officials in identifying and returning them to their respective owners, while also minimizing traffic disruptions.
Rajput further explained, “The corporation has established a CCTV network across 130 junctions. These cameras photograph cows, facilitating the identification of their owners. AMC is utilizing AI and deep learning technologies in this endeavor.”
The policy for managing stray dogs encompasses nine zones and 48 wards, with a total of 126 feeding spots set up throughout the city.
Shelters have also been established for street dogs.
Officials report that these initiatives have alleviated public nuisances and contributed to controlling the rise of rabies cases.
A local resident, Ekta, remarked, “In the past, people fed dogs on the roads. AMC’s designated feeding points now allow for feeding both dogs and cows in one centralized location. This change has significantly improved cleanliness and convenience for everyone.”
Officials emphasize that this initiative not only ensures the safety of both animals and the public but also plays a role in maintaining the city’s cleanliness.
They add that it fosters discipline, compassion, and awareness towards animals, thereby supporting the larger 'Clean City' campaign.
