Ahmedabad, Jan 14 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah commemorated the festival of Makar Sankranti, also referred to as Uttarayan, on Tuesday by engaging in kite-flying alongside Gujarat's Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

The Home Minister, who also oversees the Cooperation Ministry, visited the Shantiniketan Society located in Ahmedabad's Memnagar and took part in the celebrations. He extended warm wishes to the residents of the society during this auspicious occasion.

Earlier, Amit Shah received a hearty welcome from the community members, including women and children, who adorned the area with vibrant kites and rangoli to greet him.

As the Union Minister indulged in kite flying, many locals gathered on their rooftops and terraces to catch a glimpse of the Home Minister.

On his X handle, Gujarat CM Patel shared images from the kite-flying celebrations and conveyed his greetings to all on Makar Sankranti.

Additionally, the Home Minister took to the social media platform 'X' to wish the nation on this festive occasion.

He stated, "Makar Sankranti symbolizes steadfast belief in Indian culture and traditions. Heartfelt greetings to my fellow countrymen on this sacred festival of vigor, enthusiasm, and advancement," he posted on X.

Every year on January 14, Makar Sankranti signifies the first day of the Sun’s transition into the Makara (Capricorn zodiac sign), marking the conclusion of the Winter solstice and the onset of longer days. It is celebrated under various names in different regions, such as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam, and Maghi in Punjab.

In Gujarat, the event is known as Uttarayan, and kite flying stands out as the most cherished tradition. People gather on their rooftops to revel in the kite flying festivities and partake in friendly kite-fighting across the clear skies.
