Kolkata, Dec 30 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah has guaranteed the Matua community that the voting rights of those individuals who have submitted applications for citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) will be safeguarded.
Addressing the media in Kolkata, he affirmed that community members applying for citizenship will maintain their voting rights.
“The Matua community has nothing to fear. Every refugee who has arrived in India will be recognized as a citizen. This is the promise of the BJP. No one, not even Mamata Banerjee, can harm them,” the Union Home Minister stated, reiterating the commitment to protect refugees while continuing the crackdown on infiltrators.
The Matuas originate from a socially disadvantaged background and migrated to West Bengal as refugees from neighboring Bangladesh, primarily settling in regions like Nadia and North 24 Parganas.
Following the initiation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have frequently claimed that numerous Matua voters residing in the state risk losing their voting rights.
On Tuesday, the Union Home Minister took the chance to reassure the Matua community and all refugees facing religious persecution in West Bengal of their security and voting rights.
During his address, he also launched a fierce critique against the Chief Minister for her refusal to implement the Center's social welfare initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat and PM Kisan Yojana in West Bengal.
“Mamata Banerjee fears losing her voter base. The popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi intimidates her. This fear has led her to block the execution of schemes like Ayushman Bharat in the state,” Shah asserted.
Additionally, he criticized Banerjee's recent initiatives to announce several temples in West Bengal, funded by the state's budget.
“This is merely an attempt to soothe the wounds caused by her long-standing politics of appeasement. However, it is too late, and these efforts will prove ineffective,” he remarked.
He further noted that even national infrastructure development projects are hindered solely in West Bengal.
“The Indian government is pursuing infrastructure development across the nation. Why are projects obstructed only in West Bengal? Why are there no issues in states like Tamil Nadu and Telangana? Why was there no obstruction in Uttar Pradesh during Akhilesh Yadav's tenure? The Trinamool Congress has developed a habit of opposing any Central initiative, and their opposition is no longer taken seriously,” the Union Home Minister concluded.
