New Delhi, Oct 5 (NationPress) A young man hailing from Amritsar, Punjab, Gurpreet Singh, who found himself trapped in Iran after becoming a victim of human trafficking, has returned to his homeland thanks to the prompt actions of the Indian government.
Tarun Chugh, the National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressed his heartfelt appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during a recent statement in Amritsar, acknowledging their role in ensuring Gurpreet's safe return.
Chugh described the situation as both emotional and sensitive, noting the immense anxiety experienced by Gurpreet's family during the two-week period when distressing videos of his suffering circulated on social media.
“Thanks to the timely intervention of the government, the youth has been rescued and reunited with his family. We deeply appreciate the efforts of the Prime Minister, the External Affairs Minister, and the Indian High Commission for their prompt action,” he stated.
Gurpreet recounted his traumatic experience to IANS, explaining that he had first attempted to obtain a student and tourist visa to the UK through legitimate channels. Frustrated by repeated rejections, he turned to an agent.
“The agents assured me they could send me abroad via an alternate route, but upon arriving in Iran, they confined me to a hotel room and began demanding money. I was not alone; there was someone from Rajasthan with me, but I don't know his current status,” he shared.
He further revealed, “They would contact my family, demanding ₹50 lakh. I was beaten and constantly threatened. It felt like I would never return alive.”
Gurpreet described the physical and psychological torment he endured and urged other young people to steer clear of the deceptive promises made by agents.
“I will never make this mistake again. I advise others to pursue only legal avenues,” he added.
Chugh also warned the youth against falling for the false dreams presented by agents, stating, “No illegal route or shortcut can lead to prosperity—it only brings suffering and danger.”
Gurpreet's father, Balkar Singh, expressed gratitude towards the Indian government and the Ministry of External Affairs for their unwavering support.
“My son was trapped in Iran for 14 days and endured immense suffering. However, the government assisted us at every turn, and now he is safely back home,” he stated with relief.
