Andhra Pradesh Government Moves to Secure Legal Status for Amaravati as Capital
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
On March 26, Amaravati (NationPress) witnessed a significant decision as the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet approved a resolution that will be introduced during a special session of the Legislative Assembly on March 28. This resolution urges the Union Government to officially recognize Amaravati as the capital city of Andhra Pradesh.
To facilitate this, an amendment will be made to Section-5 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
The Cabinet convened under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who emphasized the importance of the resolution after a four-hour deliberation.
Furthermore, the Cabinet has decided to replace the term 'new State capital' with 'Amaravati' in the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) Act.
Chief Minister Naidu had previously approached the Centre to seek legal validation for Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh.
The Centre has requested the state government to submit a resolution following its adoption in the State Assembly.
The goal behind this request is to ensure a clear and straightforward resolution regarding the state capital, thereby preventing any potential legal or technical issues in the future.
Once the resolution is passed by the State Assembly, it will be reviewed by the Union Cabinet, which is expected to approve it, leading to an announcement that will confirm Amaravati as the capital city of Andhra Pradesh during the current session of Parliament.
Additionally, farmers who contributed land for the capital have also expressed their desire for legal recognition of Amaravati.
During a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in January in New Delhi, Chief Minister Naidu reiterated the need for the Centre to provide statutory status to Amaravati as the state’s permanent capital.
The Chief Minister has urged the Centre to introduce a legislative Bill in Parliament for this purpose, emphasizing its importance for the state’s long-term progress and stability.
Highlighting the necessity of policy certainty, Naidu stated that formal legislative recognition of Amaravati would boost development, meet the expectations of the people of Andhra Pradesh, and enhance investor confidence.
After the TDP-led coalition government assumed power in 2024, it made the decision to revitalize the development of Amaravati as the state capital.
Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi re-initiated the capital development projects.
PM Modi had laid the foundation stone for Amaravati on October 22, 2015, during the time when TDP was in governance.
However, after the YSR Congress Party came to power in 2019, the capital development works were halted, and plans were proposed to establish three state capitals with Amaravati being designated solely as the legislative capital.
