Malappuram (Kerala), May 28 (NationPress) P.V. Anvar, who stepped down as the member representing the Nilambur Assembly constituency in Kerala in January due to disagreements with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, expressed his optimism on Wednesday regarding AICC general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal for his long-anticipated integration into the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
With Anvar's resignation leading to a by-election in Nilambur, voting is set for June 19. So far, the Congress is the only party to have declared a candidate -- Aryadan Shoukath.
“I understand many things, but my primary goal now is to ensure that the corrupt and arrogant Pinarayi Vijayan -- who seeks a third consecutive term -- is halted at all costs. I’m placing my trust in Venugopal, whom I will meet shortly,” Anvar told the press.
He voiced his dissatisfaction with the treatment he received from the Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, and noted that despite promises, his party -- the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) -- has yet to receive even associate membership in the UDF.
“There were discussions with leaders close to Satheesan. Earlier this month, the then UDF convenor, M.M. Hassan, informed me that Satheesan, as UDF chairman, would announce this on May 15 or 16. However, nothing materialized,” Anvar stated.
On Tuesday, Satheesan remarked: “Let Anvar clarify his intentions; we will consider it.”
Highlighting his electoral influence, Anvar stated: “When Priyanka Gandhi ran in the November Lok Sabha bypolls from Wayanad, my Assembly segment Nilambur provided her a margin of over 65,000 votes. Subsequently, leveraging my influence, I facilitated the control of two panchayats by Congress. What more must I do?”
Anvar reiterated that his expectations now lie on his forthcoming meeting with Venugopal. “If that does not yield results, the AITC will nominate a candidate in Nilambur. Clarity will come in the next two days.”
A former Congress member from Malappuram district, Anvar had contested and won from Nilambur as a Left-backed independent in both 2016 and 2021 before resigning in January this year.
“When Satheesan mentioned I should clarify my stance, I felt exposed. Now I feel vulnerable. I’m simply asking to be permitted to don my attire. What more must I do to merely become an associate member of the UDF?” he asked.
