Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lieutenant General K.T. Parnaik (Retd) on Tuesday, 19 May called for a stronger Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) ecosystem in the northeastern state, asserting that the sector holds the potential to become a cornerstone of socio-economic development and employment generation. The remarks were made during a meeting held in New Delhi, according to officials at Lok Bhavan in Itanagar.

Governor Parnaik made the remarks while interacting with Santanu Srivastava, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ishan International, an organisation that works on strategic partnerships with state and Central governments to support MSMEs across India. The Governor underscored that the sector can create sustainable livelihood opportunities for youth, women, artisans, farmers, and Self-Help Groups.

Arunachal's Untapped Potential

Parnaik pointed to the state's considerable natural endowments — including tribal crafts, organic farming potential, forest produce, eco-tourism prospects, and a unique cultural heritage — as fertile ground for local enterprise. He specifically highlighted sectors such as food processing, bamboo and cane products, handloom and handicrafts, horticulture, herbal products, organic agriculture, and small-scale manufacturing as areas of high promise.

Notably, Arunachal Pradesh remains one of India's least industrialised states, making MSME-led growth a particularly relevant strategy for distributing economic opportunity beyond urban centres.

Curbing Youth Migration

A recurring concern in the region is the outward migration of young people to cities in search of employment. The Governor argued that a robust MSME sector could directly address this challenge by generating jobs closer to home, thereby reducing the pressure on urban labour markets in larger cities. He also noted that MSMEs can help local entrepreneurs build confidence and attain financial independence while preserving traditional skills and indigenous knowledge.

Vision: Atmanirbhar Arunachal

Governor Parnaik emphasised that with the right enablers — improved infrastructure, financial support, skill development, market connectivity, and digital access — MSMEs can drive inclusive growth, strengthen the rural economy, and contribute to the dual vision of 'Atmanirbhar Arunachal' and 'Viksit Bharat'. The interaction signals a growing push to align state-level enterprise development with the Centre's broader self-reliance agenda.

How quickly the state translates this advocacy into on-ground policy action — particularly around credit access and market linkages for small producers — will determine whether the vision moves beyond aspiration.
