Assam Chief Minister Engages with Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck

Guwahati, Dec 17 (NationPress) Following an invitation from the Royal Government of Bhutan, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is on a four-day official visit to the kingdom. On Tuesday, he engaged in discussions with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to explore ways to strengthen the historical connections between Assam and Bhutan while enhancing collaborative efforts between the two regions.
The dialogue also concentrated on promoting Bhutan’s development, improving the welfare of its citizens, and driving broader regional economic growth.
During a subsequent lunch meeting with Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Togbay, Sarma addressed mutual interests and examined pathways to fortify trade relationships between the two regions.
Sarma pointed out that Assam and Bhutan have historically enjoyed connectivity through seven established trade routes, highlighting the long-standing nature of their economic partnership.
Throughout their discussions, the Chief Minister assured the Bhutanese leadership of the unwavering commitment and cooperation from the Assam Government in enhancing trade infrastructure along the Assam-Bhutan border.
He emphasized the need for establishing additional trade routes to better serve Bhutanese traders and facilitate commerce.
Moreover, the Chief Minister showcased Assam’s initiatives under the Asom Mala program aimed at improving road connectivity, particularly between Kokrajhar and Gelephu.
In a moment of profound historical and cultural importance, the Chief Minister, alongside his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, attended the 117th National Day celebrations of Bhutan today.
The celebrations, hosted at the scenic Changlimithang Grounds in Thimphu, left a lasting impression on Sarma, who described the experience as exceptionally moving.
The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude and joy at being part of the captivating atmosphere of Bhutan's National Day festivities. The Royal Government of Bhutan extended a warm and heartfelt welcome to both Sarma and his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.
Bhutan’s National Day commemorates the coronation of the nation’s first king, Ugyen Wangchuck, in 1907. This significant event heralded the commencement of the Wangchuck dynasty, which has governed Bhutan ever since. The celebrations serve as a platform to honor Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage, reflect on the sacrifices made by its ancestors, and reaffirm the citizens' commitment to the nation’s lasting peace, prosperity, and happiness.
