Guwahati, Jan 19 (NationPress) Gyanendra Pratap Singh, a prominent IPS officer currently serving as Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP), has been appointed as the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

An official order from the Department of Personnel and Training, under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, confirmed that the Cabinet's Appointments Committee has sanctioned the proposal from the Ministry of Home Affairs for appointing G.P. Singh as the CRPF chief.

This 1991 batch IPS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre will lead the CRPF until his retirement on November 30, 2027, or until further notice, whichever occurs first, according to the directive.

Singh was named the Director General of Police for Assam on January 31, 2023.

Officials indicated that Vitul Kumar, the Special DG of the CRPF, will officially transfer his responsibilities as the DG CRPF to G.P. Singh, who has previously held a position with the Special Protection Group (SPG).

Before this role, Singh was the Inspector General of Police at the National Investigation Agency and was returned to his original cadre at the request of the Assam government.

Known locally as ‘Gun Point Singh’ for his stringent actions against insurgents, he served in the Jorhat district during the 1990s.

He has also worked as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for the central-western range within the Assam Police.

During the peak of the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Assam, he was designated as the ADGP (Law and Order) for the state.

Additionally, he was the Director for Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in Assam during his time as Special DGP (Law and Order) and led the Rhino Protection Task Force in 2021.

Last month, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) appointed Vitul Kumar, a 1993-batch IPS officer, as the interim CRPF DG following the retirement of Anish Dayal Singh on December 31.

The CRPF represents India’s largest paramilitary force, engaged in counter-insurgency operations and combating left-wing extremism (LWE), and is heavily deployed in regions affected by ethnic violence, such as Manipur.
