This change comes as the current police chief transitions to the role of Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
An official notification from Assam’s Home Department indicated that with Gyanendra Pratap Singh being released for central deputation, Harmeet Singh will temporarily fulfill the role of acting DGP, alongside his existing responsibilities, until a permanent appointment is made or further instructions are issued.
Harmeet Singh, who also serves as the Special DGP (HQ) and Special DGP (Border), is a member of the 1992 batch of the IPS from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. The directive stated that following the Ministry of Home Affairs' correspondence, the services of G P Singh, the current DGP of Assam, will be utilized by the CRPF for his new role as Director General on a deputation basis until his retirement on November 30, 2027, or until further notice.
The order also mentioned that the officer would be released from his duties upon the completion of the charge handover.
Previously, G P Singh, a 1991 batch officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, was appointed as the chief of the CRPF earlier this month. He took over as the DGP of Assam on January 31, 2023.
Officials noted that Vipul Kumar, the Special DG of the CRPF, will transfer his duties to G P Singh, who has also worked with the Special Protection Group (SPG).
Before this, G P Singh held the position of inspector general of police at the National Investigation Agency and returned to his original cadre at the Assam government's request.
Known locally as ‘Gun Point Singh’ for his rigorous stance against insurgents, he was previously stationed in Jorhat district during the 1990s and has served as DIG in the central-western range of Assam Police.

He also directed the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption department during his time as Special DGP (Law and Order).
In 2021, he led the Rhino Protection Task Force. The CRPF is the largest paramilitary force in India, engaged in counter-insurgency operations and addressing left-wing extremism, and has been deployed extensively in conflict-ridden areas like Manipur.
