New Delhi, Feb 14 (NationPress) The Director General (DG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), GP Singh, paid a visit to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the national capital on Friday, as reported by officials.

A senior official stated that this meeting was a courtesy call, as Singh had previously served as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Assam for nearly two hours before taking over the role of CRPF DG just a few days ago.

During the meeting, the DG exchanged pleasantries and presented a memento and a flower bouquet to the Chief Minister. Singh, an IPS officer from the 1991 batch of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, has been assigned as the CRPF chief until his retirement on November 30, 2027, or until further notice, whichever comes first.

Singh was appointed as the Director General of Police for Assam on January 31, 2023.

Officials noted that the Special DG of the CRPF, Vitul Kumar, will transfer his responsibilities as the DG CRPF to GP Singh, who has also previously worked with the Special Protection Group (SPG).

Prior to this, GP Singh served as the Inspector General of Police at the National Investigation Agency. He was repatriated to his original cadre at the Assam government's request. Locally known as ‘Gun Point Singh’ for his firm stance against insurgents, he was stationed in the Jorhat district during the 1990s.

He has also held the position of DIG central-western range in Assam Police. At the peak of protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Assam, he was appointed as the ADGP (Law and Order). Furthermore, he served as the Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in Assam during his tenure as Special DGP (Law and Order).

In 2021, he led the Rhino Protection Task Force.

Last month, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued an order granting the additional role of CRPF DG to the 1993-batch IPS officer Vitul Kumar following the retirement of Anish Dayal Singh on December 31.

The CRPF is recognized as India’s largest paramilitary force, actively engaged in counter-insurgency operations and addressing left-wing extremism (LWE). The force has also been deployed extensively in regions affected by ethnic violence, notably in Manipur.
