Boosting Connectivity: The Furkating-New Tinsukia Doubling Project in Assam
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 17 (NationPress) The recently initiated Furkating-New Tinsukia railway doubling project is poised to significantly elevate rail capacity, enhance operational efficiency, and strengthen connectivity throughout eastern Assam and its neighboring regions, as reported by officials on Tuesday.
According to Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier Railway, the project covers a distance of 194 km, with an estimated investment of around Rs 3,634 crore.
The initiative is being implemented in a well-planned, phased manner to enhance connectivity throughout Upper Assam and surrounding areas.
On March 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this essential rail link under NFR, which serves both passenger and freight transportation.
Sharma emphasized that the doubling of this route will alleviate congestion on the current single line, leading to quicker, more efficient, and reliable train services. This project is anticipated to benefit long-distance and intercity travel while also fostering regional economic development. Work on this segment is presently in progress.
In parallel, advancements are also being made on the Lumding–Furkating Double Line Project, which spans approximately 140 km and is another significant rail corridor under NFR.
Approved for the 2024-25 period at an estimated cost of Rs 2,123.70 crore, this project aims to alleviate congestion on one of the busiest single-line routes in the area.
Upon completion, it will greatly enhance train operations, minimize delays, and enable seamless transit of both passenger and freight traffic, the CPRO mentioned.
The projects are being carried out in multiple stages, with a target completion date set for January 2028.
Key milestones include phased commissioning beginning in May 2026, covering crucial sections such as Naojan–Sarupathar, Dhansiri-Rangapahar, and Dimapur connectivity.
This undertaking involves the construction of 19 major bridges, 161 minor bridges, and upgrades to 20 railway stations, underscoring the project's scale and complexity.
Northeast Frontier Railway has reaffirmed its dedication to the timely completion of these strategic initiatives, aligning with Indian Railways’ vision to modernize infrastructure and enhance connectivity across the Northeast region, as stated by Sharma.
