New Delhi, March 24 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with the Chief Ministers from various Northeastern states offered heartfelt congratulations to the Assam Rifles on its 191st Raising Day, commending the unit's valor, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to securing the borders and fostering peace in the region.

The Assam Rifles marked its 191st Raising Day on Tuesday, celebrating nearly two centuries of service since its establishment in 1835. Often referred to as the 'Sentinels of the North East', it stands as the oldest paramilitary force in India.

In a message shared on X, Amit Shah praised the commitment of the force and its members. "They protect our borders amidst the Northeast's challenging landscapes, exemplifying courage and patriotism while fostering trust among communities through humanitarian initiatives. We remember the valiant Assam Rifles personnel who laid down their lives for our nation," he remarked.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also shared his best wishes, emphasizing the force's role in national security. "This force has been pivotal in our security framework by protecting our border regions. Their steadfast dedication to the Northeastern part of India is truly commendable," he stated.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his respect for the force's bravery and service, stating, "The courageous individuals safeguard our dense Eastern landscapes and play a crucial role in ensuring ongoing peace throughout the region," in a message posted on X.

Similarly, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu regarded the event as a point of pride, recognizing the legacy of the force. "Known as the Sentinels of the North East, the Assam Rifles have a rich history of bravery, discipline, and steadfast dedication in protecting our borders and ensuring peace in the region. We honor their sacrifices and express our profound gratitude for their relentless efforts in maintaining security, stability, and harmony," he said.

Manipur Chief Minister Khemchand Yumnam also conveyed his greetings, acknowledging the force's essential role in upholding stability. "Sentinels of the North East, your valor and professionalism set the standard. In this critical phase in Manipur, your impartiality, restraint, and determination are vital for restoring peace. We salute your service," he said.

The Assam Rifles traces its history back to 1835 when it was established as a militia known as the Cachar Levy with approximately 750 personnel, primarily tasked with securing British tea estates and settlements from tribal incursions.

Over the years, the unit underwent reorganization and was renamed the Frontier Force as its duties expanded to cover operations beyond Assam's borders.

It played a crucial role in facilitating administration and trade in the region, eventually being referred to as the 'right arm of the civil and left arm of the military.'

Post-Independence, the Assam Rifles took on an even broader role, engaging in both conventional and peacekeeping efforts across the Northeast, particularly in response to insurgencies and unrest.

Its responsibilities now encompass maintaining law and order, conducting counter-insurgency operations, and nurturing trust within local communities.

Today, the unit operates in some of the most remote and underdeveloped regions, providing security and assistance to local populations.

Over the decades, the force has seen significant growth from 17 battalions in 1960 to 46 battalions currently, reflecting its increasing significance within India's security framework.
