The security forces apprehended six individuals, including a national from Myanmar, in connection with the seized drugs and explosives.
A spokesperson for the defense stated that the Assam Rifles, alongside officials from the Excise and Narcotics Department, conducted a coordinated raid and discovered highly addictive Methamphetamine tablets weighing 3.33 kg, valued at Rs 9.99 crore, in the Champhai district.
During this operation, three smugglers transporting the Methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as Yaba or party tablets, were also arrested.
In two additional incidents, the Assam Rifles and Excise and Narcotics Department officials apprehended a drug dealer and confiscated heroin weighing 116.81 grams worth approximately Rs 82 lakh from the Lawngtalai district. Furthermore, a 56-year-old Myanmar national, identified as Thangdeihpau, was arrested in Champhai district, where authorities recovered ten hongs of heroin valued at Rs 82.50 lakh.
In a fourth operation, Assam Rifles personnel seized 32 bags of illegal Areca nuts valued at around Rs 18 lakh in Champhai district. All confiscated drugs and contraband have been traced back to smuggling activities originating from neighboring Myanmar.
In a fifth incident, acting on reliable intelligence regarding the transport of explosives in the Edenthar area along the Aizawl-Sairang road, Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police set up a mobile vehicle checkpoint and intercepted two vehicles, leading to the apprehension of two individuals.
From their possession, security personnel seized 800 detonators and 2000 gelatine sticks. The detained individuals and the confiscated items have been transferred to the Mizoram Police.
Despite six districts in Mizoram—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip—sharing a 510 km long unfenced border with the Chin state of Myanmar, the mountainous Champhai district has become a hotspot for smuggling various drugs, firearms, and other contraband.
A range of drugs, particularly heroin and highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, are frequently trafficked into the northeastern states of India from Myanmar, which shares a long unfenced border of 1,643 km with four northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km), and Mizoram (510 km).
