Guwahati, Feb 1 (NationPress) A 14-year-old girl, from the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community, was reportedly sexually assaulted by an employee of Assam University in Silchar. Following the incident, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed, as confirmed by the police on Saturday.
Officials from the university described this event as extremely unfortunate and have instructed the internal complaints committee (ICC) to deliver a report within a week.
As per police reports, the suspect, identified as Faruk Ahmed, is currently evading capture, prompting a manhunt for his arrest.
The victim's relative, who accompanied her to the Law Department on Friday, reported that Ahmed pulled her into the department's restroom when she was alone and attempted to undress her.
Numal Mahatta, the Superintendent of Police (SP), stated that an FIR has been registered at the local police outpost located on the university grounds.
Pradosh Kiran Nath, the registrar of Assam University, confirmed that the ICC is actively investigating the case and is working closely with police since an FIR has already been filed.
He emphasized, “We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards any criminal acts, especially those against women. We are investigating the matter thoroughly and will ensure appropriate actions are taken.”
The police further indicated that the girl has been placed in a shelter home where her statement has been documented.
In a related incident, last year, a 14-year-old girl was gang-raped by three individuals while returning from a tuition center in the Dhing area of Nagaon district, which led to significant public outrage.
During that incident, the victim, riding her bicycle, was assaulted by three men who then left her in a semi-conscious state next to a pond. Local residents discovered her and rushed her to a nearby hospital, while the police were notified.
The police reported that the attackers abandoned the girl after the assault, leaving her in distress for over an hour before she was rescued.
In a community response, villagers in Borbheti village of Dhing locality refused to perform the last rites for the main accused, Tafiqul Islam, after he died while attempting to escape from police custody.
