Guwahati, June 16 (NationPress) An extensive eviction drive commenced in Assam's Goalpara district on Monday, aiming to retrieve close to 1,500 bighas of government land that has reportedly been encroached upon in the Hasila Beel region.
This operation, spearheaded by the civil administration supported by police forces, focuses on dismantling 667 illegally constructed homes and various unauthorized structures.
Officials revealed that the encroached territory houses five schools and a Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) project, all functioning without the necessary legal permissions.
Prior to the eviction, the administration carried out an extensive notification campaign. Notices were issued to illegal settlers, and public appeals to vacate the area were broadcast through banners and loudspeakers, urging residents to leave by June 15.
Numerous structures—including homes, shops, boundary walls, buildings, and even private pipelines and borewells—are now set for demolition as part of this ongoing initiative.
To facilitate a smooth operation, the Goalpara Police have established a heavy security presence in the area to uphold law and order and avert any potential unrest.
Officials indicated that this drive is part of a broader initiative to reclaim encroached public land and redirect it for public infrastructure and sustainable development projects.
Recently, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated his government's dedication to addressing the pervasive issue of land encroachment, labeling the current drive as monumental in scope.
Sarma expressed concerns regarding a “politically motivated demographic transformation” that he believes poses a threat to the state's social balance.
The Chief Minister shared updates on the significant actions taken over the past four years to reclaim government land, stating that a large-scale campaign against encroachment has been in effect, yielding considerable success.
“Over the past four years, we have executed a comprehensive campaign to reclaim government lands, and this initiative will persist,” he stated.
According to the Chief Minister, eviction operations have been conducted across all districts, with most reclaimed areas remaining free of new settlements.
