New Delhi, Feb 23 (NationPress) AAP MLA and former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has been designated as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly during the party's legislative meeting held on Sunday, creating a historic milestone for the national capital.
This marks the first occasion that a woman will spearhead the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, and notably, a woman LoP will contend against a woman Chief Minister, BJP's Rekha Gupta.
Atishi, who took over from Arvind Kejriwal in the highest office, made history as the youngest Chief Minister of Delhi in September 2024, managing key portfolios in the previous AAP administration, such as Education, Power, Water, PWD, and Services, serving as the sole female minister in the Cabinet.
While announcing this decision, AAP MLA Gopal Rai stated, "In the legislative party meeting, it has been unanimously decided that Atishi will serve as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly."
"During difficult times, Atishi has been a dedicated servant to the people of Delhi as both Chief Minister and Cabinet Minister. Should the BJP fail to honor its commitments, AAP will function as a responsible and formidable Opposition," he added.
Expressing her appreciation to the party, Atishi thanked AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the legislative party for their confidence in her.
"The AAP has been selected as the Opposition by the electorate. A robust Opposition is one that amplifies the voice of the people. We will ensure that the BJP meets all the pledges made by the Prime Minister and its party representatives," she articulated.
Atishi reaffirmed AAP's dedication to holding the new government accountable, especially regarding pledges made to women.
"I am grateful to AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the Legislative Party for their trust. The AAP has been entrusted as the Opposition by the citizens of Delhi. A strong Opposition is one that amplifies the voice of the people. We will compel the BJP to fulfill all promises made by the Prime Minister and its party leaders," she reiterated.
"We assure the women of Delhi that we will ensure the Rekha Gupta-led administration fulfills its commitment of delivering Rs 2,500 as pledged," she added.
The BJP made a significant return in the Delhi Assembly elections conducted on February 5, winning 48 out of 70 seats, concluding a 27-year-long absence of power in the national capital.
AAP, which governed Delhi for nearly a decade, secured 22 seats, while the Congress failed to gain any.
