New Delhi, Aug 21 (NationPress) Following a disturbing attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a Jan Sunvai event, security measures at the Chief Minister's official residence in Civil Lines were significantly heightened on Thursday. A contingent of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel has been deployed to strengthen the protective measures.
This incident has caused considerable unrest within the political sphere, leading to numerous political figures visiting the Chief Minister. Delhi MPs Manoj Tiwari, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Yogendra Chandolia, Praveen Khandelwal, and Bansuri Swaraj reached out to CM Gupta to check on her well-being and discuss the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The suspect, Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, who is accused of the assault during a public grievance session, was presented in court on Thursday and has been placed in police custody for five days.
The Delhi Police filed charges against the 41-year-old under the recently enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), invoking Section 109 (attempted murder), Section 132 (obstructing a public servant), and Section 221 (hindering public duties).
“The suspect is now in police custody, and an FIR citing relevant sections of the BNS has been lodged at the Civil Lines Police Station. Investigations are ongoing from multiple angles,” stated the Delhi Police.
Central intelligence agencies are collaborating with the Delhi Police Special Cell to interrogate the suspect and uncover his motives. Initial investigations suggest that Rajesh traveled to Delhi from Rajkot on Tuesday morning—marking his initial visit to the capital. He resided at Gujarati Bhavan in Civil Lines before heading to the Chief Minister's residence.
Authorities revealed that Rajesh has a criminal background, with five cases recorded against him at the Bhaktinagar Police Station in Rajkot. He was acquitted in four cases, while one remains active, with a hearing scheduled for September 9.
Furthermore, the Gujarat Police have been notified regarding the case, and an official confirmation regarding additional details about the suspect is still pending.
