The post-mortem report in the Greater Noida dowry death case has revealed extensive external and internal injuries on the body of Deepika Nagar, a 24-year-old woman who died on 19 May after allegedly jumping from the third floor of a building in Jalpura village. The autopsy findings indicate she was under 'severe trauma' before her death, with injuries including a ruptured spleen and hematoma in the brain.

What the Autopsy Found

The post-mortem report documented a hematoma — a blood clot — in the central and left regions of the brain, along with haemorrhage. Internally, the rupture of the spleen was identified as a key contributor to the severe trauma. External injuries were equally alarming: swelling on her face, injuries on her left elbow and left forearm, and wounds in the lower back and lower abdomen.

The report noted a blue pressure mark or contusion measuring approximately 38 cm × 14 cm on the right thigh, and a bone-deep wound measuring approximately 4 cm × 1.5 cm on the left knee joint. Bleeding from the left ear and deep abrasion marks on the left side of the chest and abdomen were also recorded.

Background: Dowry Demands and Alleged Harassment

Deepika had married Hrithik approximately 1.5 years before her death. According to her family, she was subjected to continuous physical and mental harassment by her husband and in-laws over escalating dowry demands. Her parents stated they had already given ₹10 lakh in cash, a car, and several ornaments at the time of the wedding. Despite this, the demands allegedly continued to grow — most recently, the family claimed they were being pressured to hand over an SUV and ₹50 lakh in cash.

Deepika's family alleged that the tormenting intensified over time, ultimately driving her to jump from the third floor of the building in Jalpura village, Greater Noida.

Police Action and Investigation

Greater Noida Police registered a case following Deepika's death, with dowry harassment charges levelled against her husband and in-laws. Investigators will now seek to corroborate the autopsy findings with the family's accounts of physical and mental abuse. The nature and distribution of injuries documented in the post-mortem report are expected to be central to the prosecution's case.

Notably, the extent of internal injuries — particularly the brain hematoma and spleen rupture — raises questions about whether Deepika sustained these injuries prior to her fall, a detail that investigators will need to examine closely.

According to government data, thousands of dowry death cases are registered across the country each year, with Uttar Pradesh consistently among the states with the highest reported figures.
