As this dangerous condition continues to afflict millions around the globe, the day serves as a crucial reminder to decrease the number of 'preventable' fatalities. India has made significant strides in this area, as the financial support provided by Ayushman Bharat has allowed numerous families to access cancer treatment at no cost.
The Ayushman Bharat scheme has emerged as a vital source of hope for cancer patients, particularly those hailing from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This flagship initiative of the Government of India is delivering essential assistance by offering free treatment, alleviating families' financial burdens, and guaranteeing access to top-notch healthcare.
Dr. Piyusha Kulshrestha, Senior Consultant and Head of Radiation Oncology at the Metro Cancer Institute in Preet Vihar, shared insights with IANS regarding the significant influence of Ayushman Bharat on cancer care.
“This scheme is a transformative factor for many of our patients, especially those from states such as Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Bihar. Once they register, we can initiate their treatment within a week, which is critical when managing cancer,” remarked Dr. Kulshrestha.
She further underscored the necessity of prompt action in cancer treatment, stressing that early intervention can greatly enhance the likelihood of successful outcomes.
“In cancer care, timeliness is crucial. Once a diagnosis is established, treatment must commence immediately. Ayushman Bharat has been a lifesaver for economically weaker patients, ensuring they receive the necessary care without delay. It’s essential to understand that cancer is treatable, but only when addressed swiftly and correctly. Postponing treatment or opting for alternative methods only diminishes recovery chances,” she added.
Initiated in line with the National Health Policy 2017, Ayushman Bharat seeks to provide Universal Health Coverage (UHC) to every citizen. Its mission is to guarantee that “no one is left behind,” particularly the marginalized and economically vulnerable. The scheme aims to deliver comprehensive healthcare by tackling prevention, primary care, and specialized treatments at all service levels.
Ayushman Bharat consists of two primary components: Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs) and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), the latter of which offers financial coverage for tertiary care services such as cancer treatment.
