In a significant update from New Delhi on December 3 (NationPress), the government announced to Parliament that the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has commenced the design and development of small modular reactors (SMRs). A pre-proposal meeting was conducted in February 2025 to address inquiries from interested industries, and all clarifications were published on the NPCIL website. In response to industry requests, the deadline for RFP submissions has been extended to March 31, 2026.

Furthermore, the draft Atomic Energy Bill 2025 is currently undergoing advanced processing and preparation, with ongoing incorporation of final comments and suggestions from various ministries, alongside necessary legal vetting by the Ministry of Law and Justice. The government's policy directives regarding specific aspects of the Bill are being appropriately integrated before seeking approvals.
