Kolkata, July 15 (NationPress) Following a clarification from the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday that no directive regarding warning labels on food items such as samosas and jalebis was issued, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the state government led by the Trinamool Congress will not adhere to the Centre's directives concerning this issue.
She further stated that any restrictions imposed by the government would constitute an intrusion into the individual dietary choices of the populace.
"Several media reports have suggested that the consumption of samosas and jalebis is now prohibited due to supposed directives from the Health Ministry. This is not an announcement from the government of West Bengal. We will not interfere in every aspect. We will not enforce this. I believe samosas and jalebis are cherished in other regions as well. Residents of those places also enjoy these delicacies. Let’s not meddle with people's culinary preferences," the Chief Minister conveyed in a statement shared on her official X account.
This comes in light of the Union Home Ministry's clarification that there were no instructions for warning labels on food products such as samosas and jalebis. Instead, there was merely an advisory for displaying notices in various workplaces to enhance awareness regarding the adverse effects of consuming hidden fats and excessive sugar in food items.
BJP's IT Cell Chief and the party's central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, promptly dismissed the Chief Minister's claims, asserting that Mamata Banerjee's administrative focus has devolved into emphasizing fabricated issues.
"Occupying the Chief Minister's position without any genuine governance to provide, Mamata Banerjee has resorted to tweeting about fictitious issues. The Union Health Ministry has not issued any advisories banning samosas or jalebis. This is pure fantasy -- propagated by the Chief Minister for trivial publicity," Malviya remarked in a statement on his official X account.
According to the BJP leader, "With diminishing credibility and her authority challenged by her nephew, Mamata Banerjee has begun disseminating falsehoods regarding imaginary controversies."
"For someone in the Chief Minister's office, this is not just humiliating -- it's a disgrace to the dignity of the role. West Bengal deserves superior governance," Malviya asserted.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Chief Minister accused the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) of creating flood-like conditions in certain areas of West Bengal by releasing water from their dams without prior notice to the state government.
She claimed that the DVC has persisted with this practice despite her repeated appeals to various Central authorities, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office.
