West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has constituted a 20-member special task force to accelerate the implementation of long-pending railway infrastructure projects across the state, following a high-level meeting between the Chief Minister and Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in Kolkata last week. The task force, headed by West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Agarwal, brings together senior state bureaucrats and railway officials under a single coordination body.

Composition of the Task Force

The 20-member panel draws representation from multiple state government departments — including Home, Transport, and Land and Revenue — alongside officials from Eastern Rail, South-Eastern Rail, Northeast Frontier Rail, Metro Rail, and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), according to insiders from the state secretariat at Nabanna. The ₹1 Lakh Crore Railway Push

At the conclusion of his meeting with Railways Minister Vaishnaw, Chief Minister Adhikari announced that Indian Railways is set to implement ₹1 lakh crore worth of railway infrastructure projects in West Bengal in the coming period, with the stated objective of ensuring that every district in the state is adequately connected through the rail network. Adhikari's Dig at the Previous Government

Speaking at the occasion, CM Adhikari pointedly accused the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of perpetually being in 'battle mode' with the Union government, arguing that this adversarial posture led to numerous railway projects being delayed or left unimplemented. He said the current dispensation will work in close coordination with the Centre and that infrastructure projects will now move at a significantly faster pace. Bullet Train and New Services on the Horizon

Railways Minister Vaishnaw also announced the introduction of a bullet train service in West Bengal during his Kolkata visit. The proposed service would originate from New Delhi and terminate at Siliguri in North Bengal, passing through Lucknow, Varanasi, and Patna — reportedly covering the entire distance in just six hours. Additionally, 60 new train services are to be introduced in the state over the next five years, according to the minister's announcement.
