Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 30 (NationPress) A group of actors from the Bengali film and television sector on Monday called for an investigation into the tragic demise of actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, who unfortunately lost his life while filming at Talsari beach in Odisha.
Actors Sudipta Chakraborty and Rupanjana Mitra have been particularly vocal, insisting on a thorough and unbiased inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Rupanjana Mitra expressed her outrage on Instagram following the incident, stating, "Filming is occurring without adequate safety protocols; the industry must take responsibility for this. This cannot be overlooked any longer. The so-called Bengali film industry is not a safe haven for artists. Numerous artists have risked their lives in this profession. Arunoday was a consummate professional. Filming was in progress at that moment. May those accountable face the consequences."
Meanwhile, Sudipta Chakraborty, a member of the West Bengal Motion Pictures Artistes' Forum, took to social media to demand an inquiry, saying, "I call for a detailed and impartial police investigation into the unnatural death at the shooting site."
Rupsa Guha, a well-known figure in the television circuit, was initially in disbelief upon hearing about Rahul’s death. Later, in a Facebook message, she posed a critical question: "Did he fall off the boat, or did he get carried away by the strong currents of the sea while filming for a drone shot? That is my sole inquiry. There is a lack of transparency. We insist on transparency."
On the previous day, the 42-year-old actor was filming for the television series 'Bhole Baba Paar Karega'. He entered the water at Talsari just as the tide surged. Reports indicate that he was swept away at that precise moment. Technicians later recovered him from the water. Initial assessments suggest his death was due to drowning. He was reportedly rushed to a hospital in Digha, located in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal, but unfortunately did not survive the journey.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place at Tamluk hospital later today, and his body will be returned to his family thereafter.
A case of unnatural death has been filed at the Digha Police Station.
This tragic event has put the entire Bengali film and television industry in shock. Fellow actors, directors, and technicians have expressed their sorrow over the untimely passing of the actor.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended her condolences on Sunday evening. Rahul was best recognized for his role in the blockbuster Bengali film, 'Chirodini Tumi Je Amar'. He is survived by his mother, his wife, fellow actor Priyanka Sarkar, and their 13-year-old son.
Rahul had made a name for himself in the Bengali television landscape through various character roles over the years.
He gained recognition for his performance in the hit film 'Chirodini tumi je amar' in 2008, followed by successful projects such as 'Tumi asbe bole' (2014), 'Zulfiqar' (2016), 'Byomkesh Gotro' (2018), 'Biday Byomkesh' (2018), and 'The Academy of Fine Arts' (2025).
