Kolkata, Dec 2 (NationPress) West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asserted on Tuesday that since 2011, a remarkable 1.72 crore individuals in the state have moved above the below poverty line (BPL) threshold, coinciding with the commencement of the Trinamool Congress governance and the end of a 34-year Left Front regime.
During an event where she unveiled a progress report detailing the accomplishments of her government since taking office, Banerjee attributed this achievement largely to extensive job creation across the state during the analyzed period.
"From 2011 until now, we have successfully lifted 1.72 crore individuals above the BPL status. Over this period, two crore new jobs have been created, resulting in a 40 percent reduction in unemployment rates. Additionally, we have established six new economic corridors that are set to attract investments worth around Rs 2,00,000 crore," the Chief Minister stated.
She also highlighted that the most significant employment growth in the state during this timeframe has occurred in the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector, accounting for 1.30 crore jobs.
"We have initiated 12 lakh self-help groups. Since 2011, tax revenues have surged 5.31 times, and there has been a 9.16-fold improvement in the agricultural sector. West Bengal has now emerged as a model for the entire nation," added CM Banerjee.
According to her, West Bengal has consistently excelled in implementing the 100-day scheme under the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
"After the Central government halted funding for the 100-day job scheme, we launched our own initiative called 'Karmashree', which provides jobs for 70 days each year," she mentioned.
She further noted that the West Bengal government has also extended financial support to 1.31 lakh migrant workers who have returned to the state from various regions.
In her address, she criticized the Union government for failing to release funds for various centrally sponsored schemes.
She also emphasized the achievements of the West Bengal government in the tourism sector.
"West Bengal currently ranks second among all Indian states in attracting foreign tourists," concluded CM Banerjee.
