Political Tensions Rise in Bengal Over SIR Controversy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 28 (NationPress) Political tensions escalated in West Bengal on Saturday amid the ongoing debate surrounding the special intensive revision (SIR) and various political events. Leaders from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the main opposition BJP exchanged pointed criticisms while voicing confidence in the legal system.
West Bengal Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya stated that the SIR matter has transcended politics and is now under judicial review.
"The issue is progressing and currently lies with the Judiciary. The Supreme Court of India is addressing it, and we place our full trust in the judicial process. The outcome will be just," she remarked.
Regarding the nomination of senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy to the Rajya Sabha, Bhattacharya emphasized the TMC's dedication to women's representation in politics.
"We not only advocate for women's rightful place in society, but we take concrete steps to ensure it. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is the driving force behind this initiative, supported by our esteemed MP Abhishek Banerjee, who represents the youth," she added.
In contrast, BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar from Nadia district dismissed allegations against his party as "unfounded."
"These claims are entirely baseless; where is the proof? The BJP stands firmly with Hindus, while the TMC aligns with Muslims. They often voice concerns for Bangladeshi Muslims, Rohingyas, and deceased voters," Sarkar charged.
On the SIR issue, the BJP MP noted that the TMC had initially accused the Election Commission of India of bias.
"From the outset, the TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, targeted the ECI, alleging it works for the BJP. However, the ECI is independent of BJP influence. The matter is now with the Supreme Court, and all current developments are under its jurisdiction," he stated.
In Balurghat, Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State and former West Bengal BJP President, also commented on the SIR list controversy, stating that the voter list currently in circulation is not final.
"The electoral voter list that has been released is not definitive. Certain names have been approved, while others are under review by judicial officers. Only eligible names will continue to be included. The ongoing protests are politically motivated," he asserted.
Majumdar also criticized the TMC’s nomination of former West Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar and Menaka Guruswamy for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, alleging political favoritism within the party.
"The TMC has rewarded both individuals. Rajeev Kumar was compensated for his actions during the Saradha scam investigation. As for Guruswamy, she represented Mamata Banerjee in a sensitive case. If such appointments are necessary, it reflects a lack of qualified candidates within Mamata Banerjee's TMC for the Rajya Sabha," the former State BJP President claimed.
Further commenting on Rajeev Kumar, Majumdar remarked, "I stand firm in my assessment of Rajeev Kumar. Those in the police force who support the TMC should abandon their uniforms and openly align with the party. This has now become evident."
This back-and-forth occurs against a backdrop of increased political strife in the state, as leaders from different parties reiterate their stances while the SIR remains under review by the Supreme Court.
