Bengaluru Court Delays Verdict in BJP Leader Murder Case to April 15
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, April 9 (NationPress) — The Special Court designated for MLAs and MPs in Bengaluru has postponed the announcement of its verdict to April 15 regarding the murder case of BJP leader and Zilla Panchayat member Yogesh Gowda. This case implicates sitting Dharwad Rural Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni as a key accused.
This legal matter traces back to 2016, and the court is set to determine the outcomes for 21 additional individuals associated with the incident.
The court had planned to issue the ruling today, indicating that the judgment is nearing its finalization. Legal representatives from both parties have presented extensive documentation, including thousands of pages of Supreme Court decisions relevant to the case.
Both Vinay Kulkarni and the other individuals accused were present in the courtroom.
Kulkarni is designated as accused number 15 in this case, which was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the state government. At the time the allegations arose, Kulkarni was serving as a minister and the district in-charge minister.
Yogesh Gowda was tragically murdered by a group of attackers at a gym in Dharwad on June 15, 2016. He had previously posed a political challenge to Kulkarni, which escalated the situation significantly.
Kulkarni was arrested in 2020 but was released on bail in 2021. He faced accusations of attempting to sway witnesses, prompting the CBI to request the annulment of his bail, citing violations of bail conditions. The court granted this request and revoked his bail.
Following this, Kulkarni, who currently chairs the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board, surrendered to authorities and was recently granted bail once more.
It is important to note that Kulkarni faces accusations of conspiring in the murder of Yogesh Gowda. During this period, he served as a Cabinet minister in the government led by Siddaramaiah. Although his name was mentioned early on, no measures were taken against him initially.
The BJP later highlighted this issue, with former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa pledging at election rallies that Kulkarni would be incarcerated if the BJP regained power.
The case was subsequently assigned to the CBI, resulting in Kulkarni's arrest. He spent over nine months in custody before being granted bail by the Supreme Court.
