Bengaluru–Tumakuru quadruple rail line: Land acquisition to begin in 5–6 months, says MoS Somanna
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Bengaluru–Tumakuru quadruple railway line project, estimated to cost more than ₹6,000 crore, is progressing swiftly, with land acquisition expected to commence within the next five to six months, Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna said on Saturday, 20 June. The announcement signals a concrete timeline for one of Karnataka's most anticipated rail infrastructure upgrades.
Project Status and Approvals
MoS Somanna confirmed that the detailed project report (DPR) has been completed and cleared by the technical committee. 'The detailed project report has been done and it has also been passed in the technical committee. After this it will go to the Cabinet and NITI Aayog Commission. In five to six months, acquisition will begin,' he stated.
Efforts to identify additional land required for the corridor are already underway, with officials working at a brisk pace to map parcels along the alignment between the two cities.
What the Four-Track Corridor Will Change
The existing double-track railway line between Bengaluru and Tumakuru — located 68 km apart — has been struggling to cope with rapidly growing passenger and freight traffic, resulting in frequent delays and signal-crossing holdups. Once the quadruple line is operational, express and passenger trains will be able to run on dedicated tracks without waiting for crossing clearances, cutting travel time between the two cities by nearly half.
The upgraded corridor is expected to ease congestion on one of Karnataka's busiest rail routes and deliver a significant boost to daily commuters travelling for employment, education, and business.
Metro Extension Also on the Table
Somanna also flagged a parallel proposal to extend the Bengaluru Metro network to Tumakuru. 'Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara is eager to extend the Metro lane from Bengaluru to Tumakuru and we are fully ready for it,' he said. The metro extension, if pursued, would complement the quadruple rail line and further integrate Tumakuru into Bengaluru's urban transit network.
Somanna underscored Tumakuru's strategic potential, noting: 'If at all there is any possibility to develop any city on lines with Bengaluru, it is Tumakuru.'
Why Tumakuru Matters
Tumakuru is the district headquarters of Tumakuru district and functions as a significant satellite hub for Bengaluru's workforce. The number of daily rail commuters between the two cities has been climbing steadily, driven by rising employment and educational opportunities in Bengaluru. The quadruple line project directly addresses a capacity bottleneck that has persisted for years on this corridor.
Notably, this project aligns with the broader Central government push to decongest major urban rail corridors and stimulate regional economic activity in Tier-2 cities. With DPR approval secured and Cabinet clearance the next step, the project's execution timeline will come into sharper focus once land acquisition formally begins.
