Bengaluru, April 16 (NationPress) In a devastating event, one individual lost their life when a viaduct being transported for the Namma Metro project collapsed onto an autorickshaw in Bengaluru.

The accident transpired around midnight on Tuesday at Kogilu Cross, close to Yelahanka. Authorities reported that the viaduct, intended for Metro construction, fell from the truck, resulting in the immediate death of the autorickshaw driver, identified as Khasim Saab.

At the time of the incident, Khasim, a resident of Hegde Nagar, was transporting a passenger toward Nagawara. Fortunately, the passenger managed to escape unharmed, according to the police.

The viaduct, a large concrete structure, was being moved on an 18-wheeler truck for the airport Metro line. While navigating a turn at Kogilu Cross, the truck's trailer became detached from its cabin, breaking apart and leading to the viaduct's fall onto the roadway, as stated by police.

Regrettably, the viaduct crashed down on the autorickshaw. Preliminary reports suggest that the passenger had just exited the vehicle moments before the accident.

Unfortunately, Khasim remained inside and was tragically crushed by the falling structure. The autorickshaw was left completely mangled.

Law enforcement has initiated a search for the truck driver, who absconded following the incident.

After the accident, bystanders and local residents hurried to assist the victim. Police arrived promptly, but a crane was essential to lift the heavy viaduct.

Residents expressed their frustration over the crane's delayed arrival, questioning both police and other officials. Some even resorted to stone-throwing, sources reported.

Eventually, police regained control, and once the crane arrived, the viaduct was lifted, allowing for the recovery of Khasim's body.

Local community members voiced their anger towards the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), holding officials accountable for negligence.

Earlier, on January 10, 2023, a tech worker and her toddler lost their lives in HBR Layout when an under-construction Metro pier collapsed onto a motorcycle carrying four family members.

Bengaluru police charged ten individuals, including representatives from Nagarjuna Constructions Company (NCC) and four BMRCL officials, in connection with that incident.

A similar tragedy occurred in January 2023 on Nagawara Main Road, where a massive viaduct fell, resulting in the death of a motorcyclist. That case fell under the jurisdiction of the Yelahanka police station.
