Why is Bihar DGP Avoiding Questions on the Hijab Controversy?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Dec 22 (NationPress) The Bihar Director General of Police (DGP), Vinay Kumar, refrained from addressing inquiries regarding the ongoing Hijab controversy in the state on Monday, as political tensions continue to rise. This controversy involves Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, with the opposition demanding an apology from him.
On that day, reporters pressed DGP Kumar on whether any actions would be taken against the Chief Minister. This inquiry comes at a time when Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has indicated intentions to impose strict measures against miscreants.
However, the DGP sidestepped the question.
Rather than commenting on the Chief Minister's actions, he elaborated on the government’s and police department’s efforts to ensure women's safety.
DGP Kumar revealed that an “Abhaya Brigade” has been established in the state to bolster the security of women.
He mentioned plans for the police department to acquire approximately 2,000 scooters next year, which will be utilized by female police officers.
According to him, these women officers will be stationed at coaching institutes, colleges, public venues, and busy areas to oversee situations and take prompt action against offenders.
This initiative, he stated, is designed to guarantee a rapid response and enhance the safety of women throughout Bihar.
The controversy erupted on December 15 during a ceremony where appointment letters were distributed to AYUSH doctors in Patna. During this event, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar allegedly removed the hijab of a female doctor, leading to a significant political outcry.
The woman, identified as Nusrat Parveen, approached the stage to accept her appointment letter. After handing over the letter, the Chief Minister reportedly looked at her and inquired, “What is this?”
She responded, “It’s a hijab, sir.”
In response, the Chief Minister said, “Remove it,” and took it off himself.
This incident was recorded on video and quickly went viral, inciting widespread outrage.
