Bihar Mushroom Growers Express Gratitude for PMFME Initiative
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, March 14 (NationPress) A government's success can often be gauged by the effectiveness of its policies at the grassroots level. The Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme exemplifies this principle.
Initiated in June 2020, the PMFME scheme is dedicated to enhancing and formalizing micro food processing units nationwide. This initiative is part of the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan' and aligns with the vision of promoting local products within the food processing industry. It provides vital financial, technical, and business support to entrepreneurs, facilitating the establishment of new operations or the upgrading of existing ones.
The primary goal of this scheme is to bolster the competitiveness of micro enterprises, integrating them into the organized sector and creating new avenues for growth.
One of the beneficiaries, Veeru Rajak from Sheikhpura, Bihar, shared with IANS, "Thanks to the loan from the PMFME scheme, I ventured into the mushroom business, which now allows me to provide for my family. My children are receiving quality education, and I employ about 10–15 individuals here."
Rajak elaborated, "I distribute my mushrooms throughout the city and also sell them directly at the local vegetable market."
He continued, "Previously, I undertook small jobs from home, but it was insufficient to sustain my family. With the government's loan, I established my own business. Now, I am content with my work, earning a good income, and supporting my family effectively."
Rajak urged the government to extend this opportunity to more individuals, stating, "This initiative is commendable. I am grateful to the government and encourage them to let more people benefit from this scheme, which will enhance their income sources."
The PMFME scheme also aims to directly support 200,000 micro food processing units through credit-linked subsidies. It seeks to create shared infrastructure and reinforce institutional support to accelerate growth in the sector.
Adopting the One District One Product (ODOP) approach, the scheme enhances procurement, services, and marketing. States select products, focusing on perishables like fruits, vegetables, spices, fisheries, as well as traditional items such as honey and turmeric. The support is concentrated on processing, storage, branding, and minimizing wastage.
By emphasizing ODOP, establishing common infrastructure, providing skill training, and ensuring access to credit, the PMFME equips small entrepreneurs with the necessary resources to thrive and compete. By minimizing waste, enhancing value addition, and fostering branding, the scheme not only uplifts farmers' and producers' incomes but also generates jobs and supports rural development.
