Tejashwi Yadav Critiques Bihar's Prohibition as a Corruption Catalyst Following Hooch Incident
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, April 3 (NationPress) Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, has raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of the state's prohibition policy following a recent hooch tragedy in East Champaran district. Reports indicate that at least four individuals have died after consuming suspected toxic liquor, while six others have reportedly lost their eyesight, with several more receiving treatment for spurious liquor consumption.
This unfortunate incident occurred in Balganga village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Turkauliya police station, after numerous villagers ingested the illicit liquor on Wednesday evening.
In a social media statement, Yadav described the event as “deeply tragic” and claimed it reveals fundamental flaws in the liquor prohibition law enforced by the NDA government. He characterized the policy as a cash cow for corruption, noting that the deaths and injuries underscore the failure of the prohibition law. “This is not an isolated incident,” he asserted.
Yadav cited statistics revealing that over 1,300 individuals have perished due to counterfeit liquor in Bihar since the prohibition was enacted in April 2016. He further suggested that the actual figure could be much higher, as many cases remain unreported.
He also accused certain factions within the ruling coalition, along with officials and the alleged liquor mafia, of gaining from the current system. “The intent behind prohibition has been completely undermined. Illegal liquor is being produced and sold openly, and in some instances, it is even delivered directly to people's homes, while ordinary citizens are paying with their lives,” he claimed.
These remarks have sparked a more intense political discourse surrounding Bihar’s prohibition policy, which has faced increased scrutiny following repeated hooch tragedies across the state. In response to the situation, the police have launched stringent actions, with Superintendent of Police Swarn Prabhat suspending the Station House Officer of Turkauliya Police Station, Umashankar Manjhi, due to allegations of negligence.
Additionally, a village watchman has also been suspended in connection with this case.
