A serious rail accident was narrowly averted on Saturday, 18 July on the Kiul-Jamalpur railway section in Lakhisarai district, Bihar, when the Up Bhagalpur-Muzaffarpur Janseva Express struck a tractor-trolley loaded with wood that had become stranded on a level crossing near Rampur Halt. The loco pilot's swift deployment of emergency brakes reduced the train's speed sufficiently to prevent casualties, averting what railway officials described as a potentially major tragedy.

How the Collision Unfolded

According to eyewitnesses, the tractor-trolley became stuck on the tracks while attempting to cross the level crossing. As the Janseva Express bore down on the obstruction, the loco pilot spotted the stranded vehicle from a distance and immediately activated the emergency braking system. Although the train could not halt completely before impact, its speed had been significantly reduced by the time of collision, resulting in a low-impact strike that caused no injuries to passengers or railway staff onboard.

The collision nonetheless inflicted visible damage to the locomotive's front end, including the windscreen, headlight, and other forward-facing components. The tractor driver reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene following the incident.

Disruption and Track Clearance

Railway operations on the section were temporarily suspended as officials worked to remove the damaged tractor-trolley from the tracks. The clearance operation took approximately 45 minutes, during which the Janseva Express remained halted near the Rampur railway crossing. Train services resumed only after railway personnel declared the track safe for movement.

Gateman Negligence Under Scrutiny

Preliminary inquiries have pointed to possible negligence by the gateman posted at the level crossing. According to initial findings, the gateman allegedly failed to alert the nearest station master or railway control despite the tractor-trolley becoming stranded on the tracks. Railway officials believe that timely communication could have enabled authorities to stop the approaching train well in advance, preventing both the collision and the resulting locomotive damage.

The matter is currently under investigation, and departmental action may follow if negligence is formally established against the gateman.

A Pattern of Level-Crossing Risk

This incident adds to a persistent concern around unmanned and poorly managed level crossings on India's rail network. The Railways has been progressively working to eliminate such crossings through road-over-bridge construction and automated gate systems, but thousands of manned crossings remain in operation across the country. The Kiul-Jamalpur section serves as a key arterial route in eastern Bihar, and any disruption has downstream effects on freight and passenger movement across the region.
