Bihar: SIT Detains Primary Suspect in Jethauli Mass Killing Case

Patna, Dec 5 (NationPress) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has taken into custody Umesh Rai, the principal suspect in the Jethauli mass murder case, near the Nepal border in Motihari on Thursday.

Rai had been evading capture for nearly one and a half years.

The tragic event unfolded on February 19, 2023, in Jethuli village, ignited by a parking disagreement that intensified due to ongoing hostility. In this assault, four individuals from the family of Munrika Yadav were killed.

A report was filed at Nadi police station on February 20, naming 26 individuals as suspects. Out of these, 15 individuals have already been apprehended and are currently in judicial custody.

Umesh Rai, recognized as the main suspect, fled the scene after the incident, skillfully avoiding arrest by relocating frequently and ultimately crossing into Nepal.

“Based on intelligence reports, the SIT monitored Rai’s movements and located him close to the Nepal border in Motihari. After conducting a raid, the SIT successfully captured him and transported him back to Patna. Rai was subsequently handed over to Kotwali police station, Patna, where we have assumed his custody for further legal procedures,” stated Nikhil Kumar, SDPO of Fatuha range, Patna.

“The Patna police have also initiated attachment proceedings against the properties of 8 absconding accused, after which a charge sheet was filed in the court,” Kumar reported.

The conflict regarding parking in Jethuli village escalated on February 19, leading to significant unrest the following day. On February 20, 2023, furious villagers protested the incident, blocking the state highway for several hours.

Villagers retaliated by targeting the properties of Umesh Rai and his associates, attacking their homes and igniting their vehicles.

The protests escalated into violence, with villagers hurling stones at the police, resulting in increased tensions in the region.
