New Delhi, Aug 14 (NationPress) Just hours after a tragic incident in which a motorcyclist was fatally injured by a falling tree in south Delhi's Kalkaji, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has urged all road management departments to swiftly locate and prune trees that could threaten public safety during the Monsoon season, according to an official announcement made on Thursday.
This directive was prompted by the unfortunate event in the Kalkaji locality, where Sudhir Kumar, aged 50, lost his life when a tree fell onto his motorcycle on a busy road following heavy rainfall. His daughter, Priya, who was accompanying him, sustained injuries.
The Chief Minister has mandated that at-risk trees be trimmed, removed, or transplanted in accordance with safety regulations, prioritizing areas with high pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
She highlighted that during the monsoon, strong winds and intense rainfall elevate the risk of large, hazardous, or rotting trees causing accidents, disrupting traffic, or damaging essential public utilities like power lines.
“Timely maintenance and intervention are crucial not only for accident prevention but also for ensuring smooth traffic flow and safeguarding vital services,” remarked CM Gupta.
Stressing that the safety of the residents of Delhi is the government's top priority, she has instructed all relevant departments to act without delay.
Furthermore, she has called for the appointment of responsible officials in each department and agency to oversee the effort, ensure adherence to safety protocols, and provide timely completion reports.
“We must ensure that such tragedies do not occur again. Every citizen deserves a secure environment, and we will take all necessary measures to achieve that,” CM Gupta declared.
In a related matter, Education Minister Ashish Sood criticized former Chief Minister and AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal for claiming that “the condition of Delhi is deteriorating significantly.”
Sood pointed out that the government, which once proclaimed an “education revolution” and touted its leader as a “man of development,” has left Delhi in disrepair, expecting that all issues could be resolved miraculously in just five and a half months.
He stated, “Our children are suffering due to their failures. In Nithari, six government schools were constructed before, during, and after their administration. Since 2020, complaints about waterlogging in these schools have persisted. When waterlogging occurs, students are sent home. Which government has been in power since 2020? It was the so-called 'man of development' and 'father of the education revolution.'”
Sood asserted that the previous administration failed to make any improvements in Delhi over a decade.
For the past five years, their MLA has represented this area, yet no advancements were made. Continuous waterlogging in these six schools puts children at risk of electric shocks. An area inspection revealed that a nearby pond used to facilitate natural rainwater drainage, but this pond was filled in during Kejriwal’s administration, exacerbating the waterlogging issue. It was also discovered that the pond was covered up due to pressure from land mafia, he explained.
