Chandigarh, July 8 (NationPress) The Punjab Police’s Counter-Intelligence unit in Jalandhar has successfully thwarted a targeted assassination scheme that spanned Punjab and Madhya Pradesh, orchestrated by the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang. This was announced by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Tuesday.
The apprehended individual is identified as Himanshu Sood, hailing from Phagwara in Kapurthala.
Authorities seized two firearms from him: a .30-bore China-made PX3 Pistol and a .32-bore pistol, accompanied by two magazines and seven cartridges.
DGP Yadav stated that initial investigations indicated that Himanshu and his associates were operating an interstate gang under the guidance of their Dubai-based handler, Namit Sharma, who is a close associate of the gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
“In June, Himanshu Sood and his gang fired shots at a hotelier named Arun in Haridwar on the orders of Namit Sharma,” he mentioned. The DGP also noted that Himanshu was instructed to eliminate three targets: one each in Madhya Pradesh, Ludhiana, and Kapurthala.
Detailing the operation, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Navjot Singh Mahal reported that police teams had received intelligence regarding Himanshu, a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, engaging in criminal conspiracies within the state. Acting promptly, a coordinated operation based on intelligence led to Himanshu's arrest and the confiscation of weapons near the Dakoha railway crossing in Jalandhar, where he was reportedly waiting for an accomplice.
Ongoing investigations are expected to yield further arrests in the coming days, added the AIG.
A case has been filed under Sections 49, 55, and 61 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as well as Sections 25 and 25 (1B) (A) of the Arms Act at the Police Station State Special Operation Cell in Amritsar.
